Biography

I’m Sandra Hernández (Vita Flumen), a Mexican-Canadian photographer based in Mexico. My passion lies in documenting the everyday stories that often go unnoticed amidst the chaos of breaking news. Through my work, I aim to explore the universality of the human experience, drawing inspiration from Georges Perec’s concept of the “infraordinary”—the beauty and complexity hidden in the mundane aspects of daily life.

Photography became an integral part of my life during my time as an architect. Architecture taught me the importance of design, structure, and storytelling in visual mediums, which naturally led me to explore photography as a tool for expression. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a profound calling. I realized that photography allowed me to connect with people, their stories, and the broader cultural narratives that shape our world.

Over the years, this passion has driven me to create impactful projects like Antología de Fotografía de Calle Mexicana, the first book dedicated to street photography in Mexico. I’m also the founder of Observadores Urbanos, a platform dedicated to promoting Ibero-American street photography and fostering a sense of community among visual storytellers.

My work has been recognized and published both locally and internationally. I’ve had the privilege of freelancing with Reuters and showcasing my work in over fifty exhibitions across four continents. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the power of photography to transcend borders and connect us through shared emotions and stories.

I’m a member of Women Photograph, a pro member of The Raw Society, and an alum of The Eddie Adams Workshop. Currently, I serve as a Fujifilm Ambassador, which allows me to inspire and support other photographers while continuing to evolve my own practice.

Beyond creating images, I’m passionate about teaching. I share my knowledge of photography and architecture at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design (EAAD) at Tecnológico de Monterrey. I believe in empowering the next generation of visual storytellers to see the world differently and use their lenses to drive change.

For me, photography is more than just a profession—it’s a way of life. It’s a tool for reflection, connection, and storytelling. My journey has been shaped by curiosity and a deep desire to understand the world, and I’m excited to see where this path will take me next.
