And Then The Mountain Burned

For over 20 years the small community of Argenta, tucked in the wilderness of British Columbia's Purcell Mountains, has been preparing for wildfire. Every spring, a small portion of the 150-person community gathers to conduct a mock-fire scenario and get their certifications for being active wildfire fighters. They inventory the red fire shed by the community hall and practice using pumps, pulaskis and radios.
On July 17, 2024, the fire finally came. Following weeks of drought, a severe lightning storm led to four fires starting on the mountainside above the community. The Argenta fire crew sprang into action and by mid-morning on July 18 they were working to suppress one of the fires. While this was ultimately successful, the other three fires would soon converge, becoming the Argenta Creek Complex Fire. It would spark a two-week evacuation of the community and burn nearly 20,000 hectares of forest. Incredibly, no structures were lost.
In a precedent setting decision, the BC Wildfire Service allowed accredited members of the Argenta Fire Crew to stay behind to help save their community. These photos tell their story.
I was born and continue to live in Argenta, BC, a place of gravel roads, bright night skies and modest homes emerging from forests. As a photojournalist I often feel quite removed from the newsworthy happenings of the world and have often considered moving to a larger centre to pursue my career.
This summer the story came to me in the form of a massive wildfire that evacuated my family and neighbours in the middle of the night. As a member of the volunteer Argenta fire crew I was allowed to stay and along with my duties of protecting houses and making water continued to flow from hydrants, I carried a small camera to document our story.
Ultimately, with no homes lost, it became a success story. One of community resilience in the face of a natural phenomena partially fueled by climate change. It solidified why I have chosen to live here, surrounded by innovative people who respect the power of nature and prepare accordingly.
